Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said the safety of the N2 highway remains a major concern. This follows the murder of a police officer this morning after the Baden Powell Drive off-ramp.

According to police the officer was attacked by unknown suspects when he stopped to change a flat tyre.

He was stabbed and succumbed to his injuries.

Ministerial Spokesperson Ewald Botha said MEC Plato has called on all police authorities and Sanral to erect and maintain sufficient access restriction fencing along the N2 to prevent access to the road reserve and the highway.

Botha said the SAPS to arrest any pedestrian on the N2 on sight and for them to be charged with contravening the National Road Traffic Act.

“Also the SAPS, Provincial Traffic and City Law Enforcement authorities need to uphold the standing orders from last year which compels any official to assist any vehicle that is pulled over on the N2” Botha added.
