Western Cape Department of Health promotes Medical Male Circumcision

The Western Cape Department of Health believes that elective medical male circumcision programme will help increase the uptake of MMC in the province.

During 2013/4 the Department performed close to 16 600 MMC's and in 2014/15 more than 15 800 males went for the procedure.

The procedure which takes 30 minute reduces the risk of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted illness and improved hygiene amongst other things.


Departmental Spokesperson Sithembiso Magubane said the advantages of having this is because it reduces the risk of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted illnesses, Improved hygiene, reducing the risk of developing penile cancer, Reduces the risk of passing the virus that causes cervical cancer to their female partners.
