The National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders has called on government and civil society to start focusing on matters of incarceration and corrections regarding inmates.

Nicro Spokesperson Jacques Sibonmana said one of the recurrent criticisms posed by the South African society is that criminals have more rights than their victims.

Sibonmana said there is a perception within our society that offenders cannot be welcomed in our communities, but the reality is both the offender and victim are part of our communities.

Meanwhile as this week marks Corrections week, Nicro’s Jacques Sibonmana said it is vitally important that we uphold our human rights. By doing so we strengthen our constitution and safe guard our democracy.

Sibonmana added that we call for rehabilitation programmes for offenders and support mechanisms for community members.  So that they receive the necessary attention and necessary programmes to move on from the traumatic experiences.
