18 arrested and five deaths repprted over the weekend in the WC

Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the weekend conducted 24 roadblocks across the province whereby 3 027 vehicles were stopped and checked.

A total of 6 961 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 523 speeding offences were recorded.

Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works Spokesperson Al-Ameen Kafaar said 1 342 drivers were screened for being under suspicion for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Kafaar said of the drivers screened 18 of them were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile also during the roadblocks 274 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness.  One person was also arrested for reckless and negligent driving in Somerset West.

Kafaar said five fatalities were reported in three separate incidents. One was a driver and three passengers and one was a pedestrian.

“In all cases it appears that those killed were not wearing seatbelts.  So seatbelts is actually a great concern for us as the provincial government” Kafaar added.
