The Democratic Alliance has called on National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega to ensure that there will be no political meddling following the arrest of ANC National Exective Committee Member Tony Yengeni, on drunken driving charges.
The ANC on Monday refused to comment
on Yengeni’s arrest.
DA MP of Police Dianne Kohler
Barnard said the drunk driving case could not go forward because of
interference with the blood sample. The Station Commander at Goodwood, who was
involved in the case, was convicted for defeating the ends of justice and
Yengeni was allowed to walk free.
Kohler Barnard added that Yengeni had
been found guilty of his parole violation at that stage, he might have had to
return to prison to serve out his four year sentence.
“Its clear Yengeni has not learnt
from his previous brush with the law and shows the impact of letting criminals
get a free pass,” Kohler Barnard said.
