The Africa National Congress in the Western Cape today held a media briefing about their planned protest on Thursday.

The ANC Provincial Secretary Songezo Mjongile said the protest is aimed at highlighting the issue of gangsterism and drugs in the province.

This follows the killings of about seven police officers in the province over the past three week, in what is alleged to be gang violence. Mjongile called on all communities to stand up against violence and drugs.

Mjongile said through the march they want to put pressure on the provincial government to put in place measures to ensure that gangsterism and drugs are a thing of the past in the province.

Cosatu, Popcru, ANCYL and Sangoco are expected to be represented at the march on Thursday.

Meanwhile the ANC in the province has strongly condemned the high number of police officers involved in rape incidents in the province.

This comes after the Independent Police Investigative Directorate on Monday released the statistics which showed that the Western Cape has the highest number of police officers involved in rape incidents.

Mjongile called on all community members, community policing forums and police officers to stand up against women abuse.

The statistics revealed that the Western Cape has 10 incidents of rape involving police officers, whereas there only 12 similar incidents in other provinces combined.

Mjongile further said irrespective of the persons` authority rape is rape and it should be fought and ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
